East Los Angeles Community Corporation and Eastmont Community Center Expand Housing Education Access for East LA Residents

For many families across East Los Angeles, homeownership represents more than a financial milestone; it represents stability, investment in community, and the possibility of building long-term security. Yet navigating the process can often feel overwhelming, particularly for first-time buyers trying to understand financing, eligibility requirements, and available assistance programs.

To help bridge that gap, East Los Angeles Community Corporation (ELACC), with outreach support from Eastmont Community Center (ECC), is expanding access to housing education through a series of First-Time Homebuyer Education Courses and Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) workshops designed to equip residents with practical knowledge and trusted guidance.

As a HUD-approved housing counseling agency, ELACC provides educational programs that help participants better understand the homebuying process, housing resources, and financial preparation necessary to make informed decisions.

The workshops primarily serve first-time homebuyers, while also supporting renters navigating rising housing costs, current homeowners interested in learning about ADUs, and community members seeking to better understand available pathways toward housing stability and wealth-building opportunities.

"Access to clear, trusted housing education can make a meaningful difference in helping families understand their options and prepare for future opportunities," said ECC. "Partnerships rooted in community outreach and education help ensure that residents are not navigating these decisions alone."

Participants in ELACC’s First-Time Homebuyer workshops receive information on key topics including budgeting, credit preparation, mortgage readiness, homebuying fundamentals, and available down payment assistance opportunities offered through city, county, and state programs.

Upon completion, participants receive a Certificate of Completion that, while not required to purchase a home, is frequently necessary to qualify for many first-time homebuyer assistance programs and participating lending opportunities. Certificates remain valid for one year and can support access to programs designed to reduce financial barriers to homeownership.

The workshops also connect residents to broader systems of support. As part of ELACC’s role as a HUD-approved agency, participants receive referrals to lenders and real estate professionals and may be connected to additional resources including financial coaching, lending circles, tax preparation assistance, and community-based services tailored to their needs.

In addition to homebuyer education, ELACC offers ADU workshops that provide homeowners with guidance on planning, permitting, and development considerations related to Accessory Dwelling Units; a growing housing option throughout California that can create greater flexibility and housing opportunity.

Eastmont Community Center is supporting outreach efforts to help ensure these resources reach residents throughout East Los Angeles. Through community engagement, neighborhood outreach, and digital communications, ECC is helping raise awareness among families, local networks, and community members who may benefit from the program.

ELACC also promotes its housing education services through a broad network of community partnerships and trusted referral channels, including local organizations, financial institutions, public agencies, educational programs, and neighborhood-based engagement efforts that help connect residents to available resources.

As housing affordability and access continue to shape conversations across Los Angeles County, partnerships focused on education and community trust remain an important part of expanding opportunity.
