Celebrating a Decade of Progress: Honoring Isaias Hernandez and Golden State Opportunity

This year marked a momentous milestone: the 10th anniversary of Golden State Opportunity (GSO) and the transformative California Earned Income Tax Credit (CalEITC). Over the past decade, this initiative helped lift countless Californians out of poverty, fostering economic stability for working families statewide.

To celebrate this incredible achievement, GSO hosted a special event on January 15, 2025, at the California Museum in Sacramento. The evening honored the dedication and hard work of those who have championed the fight against poverty, including two remarkable leaders whose contributions have left a lasting impact: Senate President pro Tem Emeritus Toni Atkins and Isaias Hernandez, Executive Director of Eastmont Community Center.

A Decade of Impact

Golden State Opportunity has been at the forefront of economic justice, creating pathways for Californians to access the resources they need to thrive. At the heart of this mission is the California Earned Income Tax Credit (CalEITC), a program designed to provide financial relief to low-income workers and families. Over the years, the program has grown into a vital tool for economic empowerment, demonstrating the power of targeted policy to change lives.

Honoring Visionary Leaders

This celebration was also an opportunity to recognize the extraordinary efforts of two trailblazing leaders:

Toni Atkins, Senate President pro Tem Emeritus

As the first woman and openly LGBTQ+ President pro Tempore of the California State Senate, Senator Atkins has been a powerful advocate for economic justice, affordable housing, and access to healthcare. Her leadership has improved the lives of countless working families, paving the way for a more equitable California.

Isaias Hernandez, Executive Director of Eastmont Community Center

Isaias Hernandez’s leadership at Eastmont Community Center in East Los Angeles has been nothing short of transformative. His unwavering commitment to the community has connected thousands of families to vital resources, including the CalEITC. Through his work, Hernandez has become a beacon of hope, helping to create pathways for financial stability and opportunity in underserved neighborhoods.

Reflecting on Progress

The event was more than a celebration—it served as a reflection on the progress made and the inspiring work of those who have dedicated their lives to creating a better future. Attendees included Treasurer Fiona Ma, California State Controller Malia Cohen, and an array of community leaders who joined together to commemorate this milestone and look ahead to a future filled with hope and opportunity.
